Routines vs Entropy

Routines vs Entropy

Often times, we hear about the need to set some proper routines/habits everyday to keep the day organized and productive. We need to set a long term horizon for ourselves and figure out a routine, which helps us get there. Then, it is just a matter of being consistent with the routines, as it compounds towards our long term goal. Although, having these stable systems in place gives us feeling of progress towards our goals, they don't have a fail-safe just in case things go south.

We can't guarantee that we would achieve our goals as life is unpredictable and we could end up distracted due to other priorities in life. That's why, I feel to accelerate our journey towards our goals, it is important to design our routines to accommodate some entropy. Entropy brings in an element of uncertainty and instability to our otherwise predictable routines. We can introduce some pre-planned entropy into our systems, so that it offers us different perceptions of our world and also pushes us to explore unknown parts of ourselves.

In a predictable system, all of our moves feels safer. But it creates a comfort zone, in which we tend to limit ourselves. That's why, if we introduce a bit of entropy, it gives that needed push for us to move to the next level, just like quantum leaps in case of electrons.

Over the past year, I've actively tried inserting myself into random situations, just to understand how much I could handle the same. In many ways, it really helped me with my anxiety and self-confidence to face more such situations.

  • Networking Events
Although there haven't much in-person events happening in and around CBE, I tried attending few networking events last year. I'm looking forward to be bit more involved in future events and learn from experience of others.
  • Leisure activities
I've made an effort to learn something new every few months to keep my mind fresh and engaged. I'm looking forward to exploring more such activities.
  • Trips
I've put in efforts to unplug and went on a few solo trips this year. I've hardly went on my own to long trips. So, I kinda surprised myself with these experiences and it helped me become self-reliant and more confident.

Breaking away from daily routines and venturing on these diverse things have helped me to broaden my horizons and discover myself, my long-term goals, and what brings me joy. Although having a bit of entropy helps in your journey, it is important to quickly transition back to our daily routines to ensure that we are making progress towards our goals. By finding the right balance, we can create a life that is both fulfilling and productive.
